Hattusa, Hittite Empire, circa 1300 BC

Hattusa, Hittite Empire, circa 1300 BC. In keeping with the militaristic ethos of the Hittites, their capital city was magnificently fortified. Already situated on advantageous terrain, it was surrounded by double walls presaging the triple walls of Constantinople. On the ridge in the upper right is the "Acropolis" which was the royal district of the city which contained the palace. The city was destroyed in 1200 BC during the great Bronze Age Collapse.
